History

Our Order was established in 1964 by Norman E. Gates who followed the philosophy of ancient wine brotherhoods by honoring wine, country and mankind. He created our organization to unite those people who produce wine, those who sell it, and those who appreciate it. Mr. Gates served as the Grand Commander from our founding in 1964 until 1995 and was succeeded by Michael D. Doukas who led our Order until 2006. Mr. Doukas was followed by William Hegland (2006 – 2008) and Terrance McCleerey (2008 – 2014). Our current Grand Commander is Buddy Hagner.

There are chapters in major cities around the globe where you will find camaraderie with people who love wine. Various opportunities to share in great wine experiences, not only at the local chapter level, but in all chapters and internationally, are available. If you do not see a chapter in your city and have an interest in starting one, contact our National Office for the region where you are located. We would welcome the opportunity to share our Order with you!

Our Story

Our organization's roots date back to the 13th century. As a founding member of the International Federation of Wine Brotherhoods (Fédération Internationale des Confréries Bachiques) or FICB, The Order of the Knights of the Vine has chapters in cities across America and continues to grow!  At one time, we also had chapters in Japan, Finland, and South Korea, however, they have now gone out on their own and have become independent members of the FICB as well.  Our membership includes professionals in all phases of the wine industry and individuals who appreciate wine and wish to learn more about this wonderful beverage. Our Order offers unique wine programs that are both educational and social for our members... professionals or just lovers of wine. Membership is open to everyone and members of any chapter are welcome to attend events at all KOV Chapters throughout the world! You are cordially invited to become a member.
